概要
第4回ランチタイムフリートークとして、講師からテーマに関する講演が行われた後、参加者間でのフリートークが実施された。講演概要は以下の通り。
Professor Doñas is currently working on three main themes: 1) Latin and Spanish literature in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, 2) Inquisition in Medieval Spain, and 3) Iberian missionaries in Japan in the 16th and 17th centuries. Today, he talked about “Inquisition and truth in Nicholas Eymerich’s Directorium inquistiorum (1376)”.
Nicholas Eymerich (c. 1317-1399) was a Roman Catholic theologian in medieval Spain and inquisidor general of the inquisition. His book Directorium Inquisitorum was used as a manual for inquisitors, providing them with all the material they needed for their job. The main idea of the whole book is about heresy. According to Eymerich, an article is heretical when it is contrary to any article of faith, or when it is against the determinations of the Church, or when it is against the Sacred Scripture approved by the Church. Thus, for him, Plato, Aristotle and the other ancient philosophers are also heretics.
Eymerich especially attacked the doctrine of Ramon Llull (1232-1315/1316), which had a great impact at that time and whose followers formed a school. He listed 100 heretical errors in Llull’s works. Eymerich had to translate his writings to find evidence of Llull’s heresy because Llull preferred mystical language rather than Scholastic terms and used Catalan rather than Latin. But in the process, Llull’s intentions and truth were lost. This is because Eymerich forged the articles contained in Llull’s books in order to condemn his doctrine.
