概要
The FLA Faculty Development (FD) Teaching Brown Bag Series held a session on November 13, from 12:40 to 13:20, featuring Prof. David Slater. Titled “Getting Students out into the Field,” the event focused on practical strategies for organizing class projects that connect students with communities beyond the university. Prof. Slater reported on his projects, including volunteering for the recovery effort in post-disaster Tohoku and working with evacuees, another on refugees in Tokyo, and a third on a Shinjuku neighborhood. He shared insights on building community relationships, preparing students for fieldwork and interviews, publishing their work, and addressing ethical considerations involving human subjects. The session provided valuable guidance for faculty on creating impactful and ethically managed student experiences, as well giving an opportunity for our faculty members to consider how best arrange such pedagogies.
